The Middle East Association has been invited to take a Trade Mission to Lebanon in June to coincide with the GREAT British Week organised by the British Embassy in Beirut.

Lebanon’s strategic geographical location and developed financial sector make it a strong and growing market for UK businesses. In 2011, the UK’s goods exports to Lebanon totaled £410m, which was a 3% increase on 2010. The established banking sector in addition to growing construction and health industries make Lebanon an attractive destination for foreign investment.

Lebanon has a long-established legal framework for foreign businesses and individuals with stable regulation from the Central Bank and a proven record in crisis management. There is a 15% tax ceiling for businesses and 20% for individuals. The favourable tax environment combines with one of the strongest secrecy laws in the world to make Lebanon an excellent venue for financial services, and the consolidated assets of the banking sector amount to $150 billion, triple Lebanon’s GDP.

Opportunity sectors for UK companies include: financial services, insurance, tourism and leisure, education, healthcare, oil and gas, consumer goods and the growing construction industry, which benefits from the government’s reconstruction program and investment from the Gulf.

The MEA is planning a trade mission to Khartoum, Republic of Sudan, from 30th June to 4th July 2012.

The trade mission will be nearly a year since the partition of the North and South into two sovereign states on 9th July, 2011. It was hardly an amicable divorce and there is tension between the two states. Currently, the Republic of South Sudan is refusing to pump oil north, which is having adverse consequences on its neighbour’s economy.

Despite these challenges, the Republic of Sudan is embarking on an ambitious programme of economic diversification, which makes it an opportune time to visit the country, hear about business opportunities and make contacts. The Government is particularly focused on agriculture – where investment from the Gulf and beyond is creating opportunities, and minerals, with large reserves of gold, iron and copper. In addition the construction sector is growing rapidly, as any recent visitor to Khartoum will confirm, and interest in UK standard education and training remains strong.

The MEA last took a mission there in July 2007 and the time is right for another successful mission. Historically there have always been close ties between the Republic of Sudan and the UK, and a number of senior Sudanese Government officials and businessmen attended university in the UK and hold British passports.

As always, we will be working in close touch with UKTI and the Mission will be open to anyone. Outside oil and gas, the sectors of most interest and importance are agriculture, mining, health and education and training.

Following the autocratic government’s end in 2011 Libya is now governed by the National Transitional Council, which has pledged to turn Libya into a plurist Democratic state.

There are urgent requirements to have master plans for the main three Libyan cities: Tripoli, Benghazi & Sebha. Development projects include: executing housing units, waste water treatment plants, roads & bridges within cities and cities’ master plans. Rebuilding of the country will involve not only the bricks and mortar of schools and hospitals but also concerns the provision of emotional and psychological support of its people, which is the remit of World for Libya under its VISTA programme.

The mission will focus on Healthcare, Education, Infrastructure and Financial Services.

Leading the Mission will be Michael Thomas, CEO – PTi and an active volunteer at World for Libya, supporting and raising awareness of the charity and its projects. Delegates will have access to leading Ministers and senior business figures, in addition to which there will be a reception, dinners and networking opportunities.

Please note that Pathfinder will be donating a portion of its management fees to World for Libya.

Pathfinder Trade & Invest (PTi) invite you to take advantage of a unique opportunity to join a VIP Trade Mission from the
17th – 21st September to Kosovo & Albania; Europe’s last economic frontier teeming with opportunities.

The Mission will be led by former Member of Parliament John Grogan who chaired the All Party Parliamentary Albania and Kosovo Groups in the last Parliament, and is supported by the British Embassy and Chamber of Commerce in both markets and by the Albanian Embassy and Kosovan Embassy

Delegates will have access to leading Ministers and senior business figures in both countries, in addition to which there will be dinners and networking opportunities with local Chambers of Commerce. The programme will be very much tailored to the interests of the participants.

The delegation will fly into Pristina by British Airways on Monday 17th September and after two days in Kosovo will travel by coach to Tirana, capital of Albania. The mission will return to London with British Airways on the evening of Friday 21st September.

Albania is one of the few nations on the continent still boasting economic growth of around 3 per cent. It is a democracy of 3.8 million people which is already a member of NATO and has aspirations to join the European Union. Tourism on the coast is growing from strength to strength. Construction has been one of the major sectors of growth and the Energy and Transportation Sectors are also buoyant. The Government is committed to a programme of privatisation and is also keen on public private sector partnerships. The British Brand is very strong partly because of the United Kingdom’s support of neighbouring Kosovo and there are opportunities for investment in Education and Training. Agriculture still accounts for over 40 per cent of employment and there is much scope for increased efficiency.

Kosovo is the youngest country in Europe with an average age of 25. There are many energetic well qualified young people and labour costs are low. The economy is in transition but there is much unexploited mineral wealth and vast potentials in the Mining, Energy, Agriculture and Food Processing sectors which present opportunities for very attractive private investments. Growth, buoyed by much international funding at nearly 5% last year, was one of the highest in Europe. Surprising sectors which are beginning to export include a high quality wine industry.

Both countries benefit from substantial aid packages from the EU and EBRD particularly for major infrastructure projects.
