British Prime Minister David Cameron’s recent working and friendship visit to Algeria confirms the good political and economic relations between the two countries. The PM said that he had “excellent” discussions with President Bouteflika, adding that his visit to Algeria was the first of a British Prime Minister since 1962. “We have agreed to forge a strategic partnership between our two countries,” he said, adding that an important part of its will be related to security, especially in defence, intelligence and fight against terrorism. David Cameron also said that he discussed with the Head of State the economic relations between the two countries and hoped that the two sides will further strengthen them in the future. “We also talked about the necessity to strengthen English language teaching in Algeria,” he concluded.

Cooperation between Algeria and the UK is “very positive,” according to many British officials, who said that the two sides are laying strong foundations for promotion of bilateral ties.

This Mission will be a great opportunity for delegates to understand better and seize the available business opportunities in Algeria and to network with their Algerian counterparts including policy makers and discuss common interests and exchange views and experiences.

European Atlantic Trade and Investment Missions will be taking a trade delegation to Panama on 15-20 April 2013.

Following the successful trade mission in 2012, European Atlantic Trade & Investment Missions will be taking another trade mission to Panama on 15-20 April 2013. The mission has the full support of the British Embassy, UKTI, the Panama Trade & Investment Agency, and the Embassy of Panama in the UK.

Thanks to massive public infrastructure development projects, an ambitious development programme, and booming transportation and logistics sectors, Panama has been dubbed “The Dubai of the Americas.” Its dollar-based economy has continued to grow at a rate of 10.6% in 2011 and is expected to continue its upward trend after the completion of the expansion of the canal in 2014, which will more than double the Canal’s capacity.

Panama is a hot destination for foreign investment, with the UK being the largest investor in the country. UK exports to Panama were worth £ 318m and imports £ 60m in 2011. There are business opportunities in:

• marine services
• financial services, telecommunications, e-commerce, insurance, and real estate.
• pharmaceuticals
• procurement related to the Panama Canal
• provision of concessionary services to the ports
• logistics, cargo services, security and business consulting
• education and training
• retail

This mission is timed to coincide with the largest international trade exhibition in Central America:

Expocomer, where the mission delegates will have a stand in the UKTI-sponsored British pavilion.

Leading the mission will be Feride Alp-Walter, who led the mission there last year.

The MEA and British Expertise, supported by Montgomery, will lead a multi-sector trade mission to Tripoli with particular focus on energy and infrastructure during both the Infrastructure Libya and Oil & Gas Libya trade fairs. Delegates will receive a discounted rate to attend and exhibit. This will be an excellent opportunity for British companies to showcase their expertise and products at two of Libya’s most significant international trade fairs.

A programme of meetings for delegates, arranged by the British Embassy in Tripoli, will also take place during the trip.

The mission will be from the 21 to 26 of April 2013, the exhibitions run between the 22 and 25 of April.

Oil & Gas Libya and Infrastructure Libya trade fairs

This mission will be focussed around two co-located exhibitions taking place at the Tripoli International Fairground. Last year the two events attracted around 200 international exhibitors from 24 countries and 4,500 business delegates. Delegates taking part in the mission will receive a specially negotiated rate for stand space (minimum stand space is 9 sqm).

Opportunities in Libya

The Libyan economy is expected to recover rapidly from 2010-2011 levels, with annual GDP growth projected to be 13.7% during 2012-2016. GDP contracted by 27.9% in 2011 but there is a growth rebound of 28.8% expected in 2012. There is strong UK government support for developing long-term relationships with Libya, both at the ministerial level and through an increased range of products from UK Export Finance.

As the Libyans lay out the future plans for their economy and the rebuilding of their country, this is an ideal time for companies to visit the country and start to establish their visibility. We anticipate that there will be opportunities for more immediate business agreements during the visit, and the important commencement of long-term relationships.

The newly-elected General National Congress (GNC) has powers to announce strategic plans for Libya’s economic future and to release budgets for public sector spending to modernise the infrastructure sector. This in turn will stimulate private sector growth on an unprecedented scale. Priorities exist across all sectors including: construction, public work, municipal engineering, transport, communications, power, electricity, water, environment and security and risk analysis.

Libya holds the largest proven oil reserves on the African continent, and production has made a substantial recovery since the fall of the Gaddafi regime. By the middle of 2012 production reached 1.4 million bpd. Libya has proven natural gas reserves of 52.8 tcf. The new government will be seeking to increase oil production to pre-revolution levels and to improve the downstream sector.
