The Middle East Association is leading a multi-sector trade mission to Libya from 5-11 March 2010. This trade mission will coincide with two exhibitions taking place in Tripoli: Infrastructure Libya 2010 and Oil & Gas Libya 2010.
Libya is a challenging market and offers enormous opportunities for British exporters of goods and services. The Libyans are keen to establish strong commercial links with the UK and the MEA can testify to the warm reception offered to visiting British businessmen. UK visible exports to Libya in 2008 were worth £280m, and the first 6 months of 2009 showed a 60% increase compared to the same period in 2008.
While hydrocarbons continue to dominate the Libyan economy, since the lifting of sanctions there is a wide range of new opportunities to be exploited. These range from the more mundane commercial and retail requirements to the rebuilding of Libya’s infrastructure, namely ports, airports, hotels, healthcare and roads. The leisure sector will play a particularly important role in the future. There is very little manufacturing in Libya and most of Libya’s consumer goods, engineering equipment and other products are imported. Other opportunities are in the IT & communications, education, training, infrastructure and tourism sectors.
Libya offers good long-term prospects for British exporters.
The mission has the full support of the British Embassy and will visit Tripoli. It will be led by Ms Feride Alp, Marketing Manager of the Middle East Association, who has extensive knowledge of Libya and who led the last Mission there in November 2009.
